Reflexão a respeito do fenômeno de ler, da leitura de fruição e das atividades culturais promovidas pela biblioteca pública, dentro da realidade brasileira, baseada na confluência de idéias e pronunciamentos que constam nas fontes bibliográficas, como na observação informal. Envolve questionamento sobre a instrumentalidade, potencialidade e possibilidades da biblioteca pública, como uma instituição, e da posição do bibliotecário na sociedade, como intermediário de bens culturais. Objetiva contribuir para o estudo de mentalidade sobre a leitura e biblioteca e discutir o valor de leitura, da liberdade e da expressão pessoal do usuário da biblioteca, dentro da crise de valores da sociedade contemporânea. Aponta os obstáculos - oriundos da mentalidade da sociedade contemporânea - que estorvam a realização dos objetivos da biblioteca pública.@pt

Reflection about the phenomenon of reading, reading enjoyment and cultural activities promoted by the public library, within the Brazilian reality, based on the confluence of ideas and statements contained in bibliographical sources, such as informal observation. It involves questions about the instrumentality, potentialities and possibilities of the public library as an institution, and the position of librarian at the society, as an intermediary in cultural property. Aims to contribute to the study of reading and thinking about the library and discuss the value of reading, freedom and personal expression library user, the crisis of values ​​in contemporary society.
