Internet Use in Academic Research: the case of UFRGS

O estudo verifica o uso que os pesquisadores da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) fazem da Internet, analisando as condições de acesso oferecidas aos docentes pesquisadores, os recursos que eles utilizam da rede e sua influência na produção científica dos docentes. Trata-se de pesquisa exploratória, com abordagem qualitativa que utilizou um questionário para coleta de dados, aplicado através de entrevista com professores das áreas de Ciências Exatas, Biológicas e Humanas. Os resultados indicam que a Universidade ainda não oferece uma estrutura totalmente adequada para uso dos investigadores. Entre os serviços mais utilizados destacam-se: correio eletrônico, acesso a base de dados, grupos de discussão e as revistas eletrônicas. A produtividade dos docentes ainda não foi afetada pelo uso da Internet.@pt

This study assess the use that researchers from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul make of the Internet, analyzing the structure offered to them, the network resources used and its impact on academicsâ production. It is an exploratory study in which a qualitative approach is used. Data was collected by means of a questionnaire answered through interviews by academics of Pure, Biological and Human Sciences. The results suggest that the University does not yet offer a totally adequate structure for Internet use. Amongst the resources used, electronic mail stands out while all the others are little used. The results also show that scientific productivity has not yet been influenced by the use of the Internet.@en
