Reflections on training and continuing education of librarians

Apresentação dos resultados gerais da pesquisa que fez avaliação do uso de material didático em dez cursos de graduação em Biblioteconomia / Ciência da Informação, com o objetivo de analisar a bibliografia utilizada, identificando disciplinas com cobertura insuficiente de material bibliográfico e fazendo recomendações de prioridade para produção de literatura especializada. As descobertas feitas, comparativamente com resultados de investigação anterior, mostraram: 1. grande maioria de material em português; 2. reforço significativo nas disciplinas de Administração de Bibliotecas e Metodologia Científica; 3. aumento substancial no número de disciplinas optativas de caráter sócio-histórico-cultural. Como aspecto negativo salientou-se o alto grau de obsolescência das bibliografias das disciplinas profissionalizantes. Partindo-se do princípio de que, provavelmente, os bibliotecários estão recebendo melhor formação desde a implantação do novo currículo, são feitas reflexões em torno de como aperfeiçoar a atuação do pessoal formado antes da implantação do novo currículo, recomendando oferecimento de cursos diferenciados de educação continuada. Levantam-se também outros aspectos da carreira/profissão no país que podem influenciar esta melhoria pretendida.@pt

Presentation of the general results of research done evaluating the use of didactic material in ten undergraduate courses in librarianship / information science, with the aim of examining the bibliography, identifying subjects with insufficient coverage of library materials and making recommendations on priorities for production of literature. The findings, compared with results of previous research showed: 1. vast majority of material in Portuguese, 2. significant enhancement in the disciplines of Management of Libraries and Scientific Methodology, 3. substantial increase in the number of elective subjects of socio-cultural history. Negatively-stressed the high degree of obsolescence of bibliographies of vocational subjects. Starting from the principle that, probably, the librarians are getting better training since the implementation of new curriculum, reflections are made about how to improve the performance of trained personnel prior to deployment of the new curriculum, recommending offering different courses of education continued. Rise also other aspects of career / profession in the country that can influence the desired improvement.@en
