Reflections on the growth of science,scientific behavior and scientificcommunication

A autora reúne idéias sobre a comunidade científica e a comunicação científica formal, propondo perspectiva para estudo do periódico científico: comunicação científica vista como parte integrante da ciência e tendo como produto, quando formal, a literatura científica. O estudo da literatura científica de uma área exigiria, portanto, atenção ao contexto em que se dá a sua geração. Os cientistas estão organizados em comunidades científicas, cujos membros, segundo alguns autores como Merton, seguiriam determinadas regras de comportamento que disciplinam a comunicação, quer entre si, quer com membros de comunidades diferentes e com o público em geral. A importância, para o estudioso do periódico científico, do conhecimento de certos traços do comportamento científico, está na centralidade do papel desempenhado na ciência e na comunicação da ciência pelo artigo publicado - o periódico e o artigo científico são os únicos meios formais para estabelecer a orginilidade e prioridade.@pt

Some aspects of the scientlfic community and scientificcommunication are examined and proposed as startingpoint for the study of the scientific periodical. Scientificcommunication is seen as inseparable part of science,producing, when formal, the scientific literatures.Scientists are organized in scientific communities,whose members are subject to certain unwritten normsof conduct, recognized by Merton. These norms,though more ideal than real, should be taken intoconsideration when studying the scientific periodicaland article, for their potentlality in explaining the waythe scientific paper is written and published, especiallywhen considering that their are the only universallyaccepted medium for establishing priority in scientificdiscovery.@en
