A adoção de um padrão nacional de formato de intercâmbio, significa aumentar extraordinariamente a eficiência e eficácia do intercâmbio de informações bibliográficas entre instituições com diferentes sistemas computadorizados de catalogação. Cada instituição, independente do sistema automatizado que usa, precisará apenas desenvolver dois programas de computador. Um programa para a geração do formato de intercâmbio, a partir do formato interno de seu sistema, e o outro para a geração inversa.@pt
