The use of abstracts and keywords in Social Sciences: an evaluation

This study aims to make an evaluation of abstracts and keywords used in periodicals published by Brazilian authors in the area of Social Sciences, in order to identify the main characteristics of these practices and how they can affect the information retrieval and representation. About 151 abstracts written by professors of the University of São Paulo were evaluated, with a view to discovering how the authors use the types of abstracts (descriptive, informative or descriptive-informative); As a second topic, we examined keywords, in an attempt to analyse how these keywords complement the abstracts, and to see if keywords can be used as tools to represent concepts in related disciplines. The results showed that the Brazilian social scientistis perfer descriptive abstracts, and that, in spite of the lack of standards, the keywords they supply can be used as a complement to the abstracts, and as indicators of interdisciplinary relations. Our conclusion is that, in spite of the importance of abstracts and keywords as informational tools, they are not properly used in the Social Sciences, and this fact may have negative effects on information retrieval.@en

Este trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar resumos e palavras-chave de artigos de periódicos publicados em Ciências Sociais por autores brasileiros, a fim de identificar as principais características desses elementos e como isso afeta a representação e recuperação de informação nessa área. Para isso, foi feita uma avaliação de 151 resumos de artigos produzidos por professores da Universidade de São Paulo em três disciplinas, Antropologia, Ciência Política e Sociologia, na tentativa de descobrir como os autores exploraram os tipos de resumo (descritivo, informativo ou descritivo-informativo); num segundo tópico, foram avaliadas as palavras-chave que acompanhavam o resumo e o seu potencial como complemento deste e como ferramenta para relacionar disciplinas. Observou-se que os autores preferem resumos descritivos em detrimento dos informativos, e que, apesar da falta de padronização, as palavras-chave fornecidas pelos autores podem ser usadas como complemento dos resumos e como indicador de algumas relações interdisciplinares. Conclui-se que, apesar da importância de resumos e palavras-chave como elementos de representação de informação, suas funções são pouco exploradas nas Ciências Sociais, o que pode afetar negativamente a recuperação da informação.@pt
