Universal library: an old mankindâs dream

This paper analyzes, under the historical perspective, the basic functions of the library, such as storage, dissemination and representation of information, evolving and accompanying the innovations of the technologies of information and communication (TICâs), which appear as a facilitator instrument to the library activities. These technologies, which configure the information society, offer conditions so that an only support embodies all mankindâs collection; make possible the dissemination of information without mediators, since the author himself allows that this texts are published in websites, databases and digital libraries. Besides that, a semantic web is seen as a solution to the representation problem, gathering and crossing various texts with the same theme to be used by the databases, search engines and web navigators. Because of all that it can be said that the dream of a universal library is coming true.@en

Analisa, sob uma perspectiva histórica, as funções básicas da biblioteca, tais como armazenagem, disseminação e representação de informações, evoluindo e acompanhando as inovações das tecnologias de informação e comunicação (TICs) que se configuram como elemento facilitador das atividades da biblioteca. Tais tecnologias, que caracterizam a sociedade da informação, oferecem condições para que um único suporte contenha todo o acervo da humanidade; possibilitam a disseminação de informações sem intermediários, vez que o próprio autor disponibiliza seus textos em portais, sites, bases de dados e bibliotecas digitais. Além disso, anuncia-se a web semântica como solução para o problema da representação, reunindo e cruzando textos diversos com temáticas comuns a serem utilizados pelas bases de dados, serviços de busca e de navegadores. Por tudo isso, há que se supor que o sonho de uma biblioteca universal está se tornando realidade.@pt
