Altmetric analysis of scientific articles in Spanish on Cardiology in the period 2010-2019

Alternative metrics offer an insight about the impact of scientific publications on social networks. The objectives of the article are to establish the impact of the main publications in Spanish on Cardiology and to determine the correlation between social networks and traditional metrics. The impact of 11.053 references of Cardiology journals in Spanish, published between 2010 and 2019, is analyzed through the number of citations received in Scopus, Altmetric and the Dimensions search engine. In order to analyze the correlation between traditional citations and alternative metrics, the Spearman correlation coefficient was used. Out of the total number of references analyzed, 7.089 (64.3%) received at least one citation in Scopus or Dimensions; while 1.975 (17.87%) have an Altmetric Attention Score (AAS) ≥ 1. However, the percentage of articles with AAS ≥ 1 grows annually: from 2.14% of articles published in 2010 to 25.62% in 2019. The correlation found between traditional citation systems and alternatives is insignificant; they obtain the highest r values between Mendeley and Dimensions (r = 0.13, p < 0.01) and Mendeley and Scopus (r = 0.10, p < 0.01). It only improves if references with AAS ≥ 1 are taken or year-to-year correlation is established. Although the publications analyzed still have a relatively low impact on social networks, this indicator is growing; so it should not be underestimated. There is a slightly positive correlation between traditional and alternative metrics.@en

[Alternative metrics offer an insight about the impact of scientific publications on social networks. => 0
