A escrita gótica tem características próprias e aspectos típicos e dominou a arte de escrever européia entre os séculos XII e XVI. Durante os séculos XV e XVI, desenvolveu variações especiais e decadentes, até sua substituição pela letra humanística. Para entender a escrita gótica é necessário retornar ao período romano, ao início da Idade Média, ao período de Carolíngeo até o aparecimento da escrita gótica no norte da França. O uso da escrita gótica tornou-se usual em quase toda a Europa, mas com variações próprias em diversas regiões. Essas variações também se diversificaram ao longo da história até chegar aos desdobramentos decadentes, que levaram a substituição do gótico pela letra humanística, como uma reação natural do Renascimento à cultura medieval.@pt

The Gothic script has its own characteristics and typical aspects and mastered the art of writing between the European twelfth and sixteenth centuries.
