Metadata for cultural collections

This article investigates metadata standards oriented to the structuring, description, management and preservation of cultural collections. There are several metadata models created by communities in the bibliographic, archival and museological areas available today, most of which are freely accessible, but which are still not widely used in Brazil. Given the growing demand for linked open data within the Semantic Web, it is extremely important to know the tools available for the description and publication of online collections. The objective of this study is to map different types of metadata for cultural resources, pointing out their main characteristics and use possibilities. This is an exploratory and qualitative research, consisting of a literature review and document analysis. In conclusion, the potential for using the metadata schemas in Brazilian cultural institutions is highlighted, enabling the management of online collections efficiently and oriented towards interoperability.@en

Este artigo investiga os padrões de metadados orientados à estruturação, descrição, gestão e preservação de acervos culturais. Existem diversos modelos de metadados criados por comunidades das áreas bibliográfica, arquivística e museológica disponíveis na atualidade, grande parte dos quais com acesso livre, mas que ainda não têm seu uso difundido no Brasil. Dada a demanda cada vez maior por dados abertos e interligados no âmbito da Web Semântica, torna-se de extrema importância o conhecimento das ferramentas disponíveis para a descrição e publicação de acervos on-line. O objetivo deste estudo é mapear os diferentes tipos de metadados aplicáveis a recursos culturais, apontando suas principais características e possibilidades de uso. Trata-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa de caráter exploratório, constituída por revisão de literatura e análise documental. Como conclusão, apontam-se as potencialidades para utilização desses padrões nas instituições culturais nacionais, viabilizando a gestão de acervos on-line de forma eficiente e orientada à interoperabilidade.@pt
