The article presents the origin and the normative evolution of the right to privacy in Brazil, clarifies the main aspects of the General Data Protection Law (LGPD) and identifies its most relevant impacts on the activities of Archives and Memory Centers. Emphasizes the relevance of receiving records with clear rules on access restrictions and creating and disseminating access and privacy policies. Alerts to the limitation of the rights of the holder in relation to the data in the files, and makes considerations about the use of technology for the preservation and access to records and for the development of routine activities. It provides guidelines for assisting the activities of archival institutions and concludes on the importance of the archivist´s role in ensuring compliance with the LGPD.@en
