This article is based on a case study related to preservation Brazilian ports heritage. As a theoretical framework, the research underwrote mainly in equity letters, which is the relevant legislation to the subject, emphasizing the resulting letter of the meeting of Governors, held in Brasilia in 1970, denominated letter of Brasilia, because includes in its content the importance of archival and library collections. In addition, archival references, more specifically on document management, this contributes to the understanding of the processing of the documentation and understanding of the information produced by the seaports. For the development of the research project that results in this work we used the following methodology, we initially mapped Brazilian ports, where it was found the existence of 60 units, between sea, river and dry, public and private ports, as it was made a cut in order to search only seaports. It was found through research that without a document management program fully established within the port institutions they cannot guarantee the full preservation of their documentary heritage from the perspective of archival science. @en

Como fundamentação teórica, a pesquisa se embasou nas cartas patrimoniais, sendo esta a legislação pertinente ao assunto, enfatizando a carta resultante do encontro de governadores, ocorrido em Brasília em 1970, denominada carta de Brasília, pois a mesma inclui em seu conteúdo a defesa dos acervos arquivísticos e bibliográficos. Além disso, referenciais arquivísticos, mais especificamente sobre a gestão documental, a qual contribui para o entendimento do trâmite da documentação e para a compreensão da informação produzida pelos portos.
