Em um consenso, diversos autores da Arquivologia justificam a existência social do arquivo como um lugar de memória. Hedstrom (2016) oferece um contraponto a tal argumento ao declarar que o conceito de memória na Arquivologia sofre de simplificação. A partir disto, o objetivo do artigo é tecer comentários sobre o entendimento do arquivo enquanto lugar de memória e a questão ética associada a tal pensamento. O itinerário dos argumentos apresentados entrelaça Arquivologia, Ciência da Informação, Ética, História e Sociologia. A reflexão ética é necessária para perceber a dimensão dos deveres e das responsabilidades do arquivista perante o consenso assumido na literatura arquivística.@pt

In a consensus, several authors from the Archival Science justifies the archives’ social existence as a memory location. Hedstrom (2016) contradicts such perspective by stating that the concept of memory in Archival Science faces the problem of abridgement. Stemming from this divergence, the purpose of this article is to comment on the perspective related to archives as a memory location and the ethic issue correlated to it. The article interlaces arguments from Archival Science, Information Science, Ethics, History and Sociology. Ethical thinking is necessary to comprehend the archivists’ duties and responsibilities in front of the common ground in the Archival Science literature.@en
