[0] => This article commemorates the seventieth anniversary of the Central Library of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) and its “Juan y Emilia Almela” Restoration Laboratory, spanning the period from 1956 to 2026. It traces the laboratory’s evolution from its artisanal beginnings, fostered by Dr. Nabor Carrillo and the pioneering work of Juan and Emilia Almela, to its current status as a scientifically driven and technologically advanced center under the leadership of Dra. Elsa Margarita Ramírez Leyva. The article highlights contemporary preventive conservation strategies, comprehensive risk management practices for safeguarding collections against emergencies and disasters, and the implementation of rigorous biosafety protocols, particularly in response to the covid–19 pandemic. It also emphasizes the significance of semi-invasive conservation treatments applied to collections such as the Rare Books Collection and the MAOP Photographic Archive, interventions that support the transition toward long–term digital preservation. The study concludes that the Restoration Laboratory has become a cornerstone in ensuring both democratic access to knowledge and the preservation of the university’s documentary heritage for future generations.@en
