                                            [0] => This study investigates the role of agricultural statistics in the debates about the modernization of agriculture in Brazil in the late 19th century. The analysis of the sources reveals that at the time there was a widespread understanding that the scarcity of statistical data hindered the formulation of effective policies. The investigation is based on reports from the Ministry of Agriculture, the work Statistical notes on the scarcity of foodstuffs in the Empire of Brazil (1860) by Sebastião Soares, and an inquiry (1873-1874) led by the Ministry of Finance.

                                            [1] => Este estudio investiga el papel de las estadísticas agrícolas en los debates sobre la modernización de la agricultura en Brasil a finales del siglo XIX. El análisis de las fuentes revela que, en ese momento, existía un entendimiento generalizado de que la escasez de datos estadísticos dificultaba la formulación de políticas eficaces. La investigación se basa en informes del Ministerio de Agricultura, la obra Notas estadísticas sobre la escasez de alimentos en el Imperio de Brasil (1860), de Sebastião Soares, y una investigación (1873-1874) dirigida por el Ministerio de Hacienda.

A análise das fontes revela que, à época, havia um entendimento generalizado de que a escassez de dados estatísticos dificultava a formulação de políticas eficazes. A investigação baseia-se em relatórios do Ministério da Agricultura, na obra Notas estatísticas sobre a escassez de gêneros alimentícios no Império do Brasil (1860), de Sebastião Soares, e em um inquérito (1873-1874) conduzido pelo Ministério da Fazenda.
