                                    [description] => The article analyses the attitude of the State powers in the practice of censorship. This attitude is marked by the conception of employment of censorship as a tool to obstruct the diffusion of the French révolutionary ideas, the encyclopedism and the liberalism that threaten Portugal. As for Brazil, only later on, after 1808, when Imprensa Régia was created, this preocupation became manifest. The researched documents include the license applications, the opinions issued by censors related to the importation and to the liberation of books by the customhouse, and finally, the opinions about the edition of the manuscripts of the period.
