Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras de Ribeirão Preto – Universidade de São Paulo. The aim of this work was to diagnose and to denounce the real situation of the elementary school
libraries maintained by São Paulo government in Ribeirão Preto town. This work reports the existence and functioning, financial, physical and informative human resources, users and
services. The data was obtained by means of verifications in loco, direct observation of the totality of schools that constituted the target of this research and by questionnaires distributed to
libraries managers. The results revealed an extremely precarious situation since the libraries practically do not exist in the searched schools, as well as very poor resources in the few existing
ones. It shows a total indifference on the part of the competent authorities in relation to an indispensable resource in the education of the Information Society.@en

Ciências da Informação e da Documentação da Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras de Ribeirão Preto da Universidade de São Paulo-USP, que teve como principal objetivo diagnosticar e denunciar a real
situação das bibliotecas das escolas de ensino fundamental da Rede Estadual de Ensino do município de Ribeirão Preto-SP, no que diz respeito à existência e funcionamento, recursos, usuários e serviços
prestados. Os dados obtidos por meio de verificações in loco, observação direta à totalidade das escolas que constituíram o público-alvo da pesquisa e aplicação de questionários aos responsáveis pelas
bibliotecas existentes permitiram detectar uma situação extremamente precária, uma vez que praticamente inexistem bibliotecas nas escolas pesquisadas, assim como recursos básicos nas poucas existentes, o que
mostra um total descaso por parte das autoridades competentes em relação a um recurso indispensável na educação da Sociedade da Informação.@pt
