Ortega suscribe el órganon o instrumento platónico que explica el lenguaje como convención social que comunica al que no sabe y al que sabe. Aristóteles llamó la retórica al equilibrio resultante de los distintos usos de la lengua. Llamó rara a la palabra informativa y definición a la aclaración de una palabra rara mediante palabras comunes que no necesitan definirse. La claridad consiste en cumplir la gramática usando mesuradamente palabras raras y comunes. El apotegma orteguiano desembrolla malentendidos de la modernidad sobre la ambigüedad de las palabras en la economía del discurso y esclarece los motivos de que la retórica haya perdurado hasta la actualidad.
