                                            [0] => The objective of this paper is to make some reflections upon an issue raised from a research fieldwork experience in the Public Library of São Luis of Maranhão: a lackness in the collection about information materials representative of Afro-Brazilian historical memory. We try to understand the reasons and the consequences of this lackness. Memory is here understood as a social construction starting from Maurice Halbwachs (1990) contribution. Memory allows the attribution of meanings for the recognition of difference, so that thereflection about memory will be established in the domain of the category of silence and its politics, silencing, starting from the study of Eni Orlandi (2007) about the construction of identity. Oral narratives, through oral account of experiences, reject silence and show us that told history could be another one. Therefore, it is presented a brief discussion upon the functions of traditional oral narratives thinking about how these could be part of Information Science studies, in particular in Collection Development area. Thus, it is necessary to analyze some of the Information Science hegemonic approaches and its supposed object, presenting another approach which includes not impressed sources, taking cultural action as a compass. Public library can include afrobrazilian oral narratives through cultural action as to make viable a collection development that expresses indeed the relation between information, culture and society. For this to happen, information/librarian professional needs to pay attention to his practices within libraries, focusing in actions that may open ways that allow to fulfill the supposed role of public library, to be all for everybody, i.e. to become indeed democratic.
                                            [1] => O objetivo deste trabalho é realizar algumas reflexões a partir de uma experiência em Biblioteca Pública no Maranhão, quando se constatou a insuficiência de materiais informacionais representativos da memória histórica dos afro-brasileiros na coleção, procurando compreender os motivos e as conseqüências desta ausência. A memória aqui é entendida como uma construção social, e a contribuição de Maurice Halbwachs (1990) será nosso ponto de partida. A memória oferece um contexto de atribuição de sentidos para o reconhecimento da diferença, assim a reflexão sobre memória será conduzida no domínio da categoria silêncio e sua política, o silenciamento, tendo como aporte o estudo de Eni Olandi (2007) na reflexão sobre o processo de construção de identidades. As narrativas orais através dos relatos de experiências via oralidade rejeitam o silêncio e nos mostram que a história contada pode ser outra. Assim, apresenta-se uma breve discussão sobre as funções das narrativas orais da tradição pensando como estas podem ser incluídas nos estudos do campo da Ciência da Informação, particularmente na área de Desenvolvimento de Coleções. Para tanto, torna-se necessário analisar algumas das abordagens da Ciência da Informação e de seu suposto objeto a partir das narrativas hegemônicas da área apresentando uma abordagem contemporânea que possibilite pensar esta atividade com outras fontes não impressas tendo a ação cultural como bússola. A biblioteca pública pode incluir as narrativas orais afrobrasileiras quando das ações culturais para tornar viável o desenvolvimento de coleções, exercendo de fato a relação informação, cultura e sociedade. Para tanto, o profissional da informação/bibliotecário precisa estar atento às práticas que desenvolvem no ambiente das bibliotecas, voltando suas ações para a abertura de caminhos que contemplem outras formas de desenvolvê-las, cumprindo o pretenso papel da biblioteca pública de ser “tudo para todos”, isto é, para que de fato se torne democrática.
