Utilizando un método histórico, la investigación se basa en los informes Los sistemas penitenciarios de Brasil, volúmenes I, II y III, elaborados por José Lemos Britto y los informes realizados por el jefe de policía al secretario del Interior, Justicia y Instrucción Pública en 1910, 1912, 1916, 1917, 1922 y 1928.
