                    [1] => A indexação tradicional, manual, sofre a interferência de muitas variáveis, dentre elas, o propósito do sistema de recuperação de informação, o tipo de linguagem adotada, a política de indexação, a natureza da área de conhecimento e a natureza e propriedade da informação científica e tecnológica. Tais variáveis tornam a indexação uma atividade complexa, sendo o indexador acusado de introduzir subjetivismo e inconsistência no seu trabalho. Pesquisas na área de indexação automática tem mostrado que não existe diferença significativa no desempenho de um e de outro tipo de indexação. Mas a indexação automática vem se sofisticando desde a experiência com o KWIC, com vista a uma recuperação mais eficaz e de custo mais baixo.
