[0] => In contemporary medical practice, the proper use of medications is crucial for ensuring effective treatments and promoting patient well-being. This requires strict adherence to medical guidelines, avoiding inappropriate external influences, and ensuring favorable outcomes. In times of government crises, the need for responsible medication use becomes even more urgent, as policy can influence the prescription and use of pharmacological substances, demanding an approach grounded in both science and medical ethics. This perspective becomes particularly relevant in public health scenarios, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, where evidence-based decisions are crucial for providing the best care to patients. With this in mind, the purpose of this study is to analyze the impact on sales rates and self-medication of specific medications, with a focus on Hydroxychloroquine, throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, spanning from 2019 to 2020. This study is based on literature reviews, conducting analyses of scientific articles and other written materials, with the aim of obtaining relevant literature sources to trace a chronology of governmental statements regarding the use of the medication in COVID-19 treatment. The final results indicate that governmental actions and policies had a significant influence on the availability and consumption of these drugs, highlighting that uncoordinated government interventions led to an increase in demand and consumption, often lacking a solid scientific foundation. Therefore, education about the dangers of self-medication is crucial for the safety of the population and the integrity of healthcare systems in times of crisis.
