                    [0] => The purpose of this article is to study the word gibi, through a historical method, about the changes in its meaning and its social and cultural assimilation. It is considered that this artistic genre and source of information for the development of special collections requires critical studies on theoretical, lexical and historiographical approaches for a better understanding of these materials for the establishment of collections. In this research, the first records were found in newspapers from 1888, analyzed in the Virtual Hemeroteca of the Brazilian National Library Foundation. It was found that initially gibi was a nickname given to black people. Later, it became a racist slur directed at black boys, with the pejorative meaning of ugly and grotesque, published in advertisements and on comic pages of periodicals. Later the word was used to refer to the black boys who sold newspapers in the streets. From these little vendors came the inspiration for the title of the magazine Gibi, launched in 1939 by the publishing house O Globo. The success in sales of the magazine turned gibi into a synonym for comic books in Brazil, and the original meaning fell into disuse. The popularization of the term inspired Brazilian libraries to adopt the name gibiteca for their comic book collections.@en
                    [1] => A proposta deste artigo é estudar a palavra gibi, através do método histórico, sobre as mudanças de seu significado e sua assimilação social e cultural. Considera-se que esse gênero artístico e fonte de informação para desenvolvimento de coleções especiais prescinde de estudos críticos sobre abordagens teóricas, lexicais e historiográficas para melhor compreensão desses materiais para o desenvolvimento de coleções. Nesta investigação, os primeiros registros foram encontrados em jornais de 1888, pesquisados na Hemeroteca Virtual da Fundação Biblioteca Nacional do Brasil. Constatou-se que inicialmente gibi era um apelido atribuído a pessoas negras. Posteriormente, transformou-se em uma gíria racista direcionada aos meninos negros, possuindo o sentido pejorativo de feio e grotesco, publicados em anúncios e em páginas de quadrinhos de periódicos. Depois a palavra passou a ser usada para designar os meninos negros que vendiam jornais nas ruas. Desses pequenos vendedores surgiu a inspiração para o título da revista Gibi, lançada em 1939 pela editora O Globo. O sucesso de vendas da revista transformou gibi em sinônimo de revista de histórias em quadrinhos no Brasil, fazendo o sentido original cair em desuso. A popularização do termo inspirou as bibliotecas brasileiras a adotarem a denominação de gibiteca para seus acervos de quadrinhos. @pt
