Somente nos últimos anos a automação chegou ao setor de seleção/aquisição, ocasionando mundanças operacionais e estruturais. Apresenta-se uma descrição destas transformações tecnológicas e organizacionais, bem como os problemas decorrentes, que culminam com a necessidade de alterações conceituais no que diz respeito a indústria da publicação, a biblioteca e a disseminação da informação.
