O artigo discute as definições apresentadas na literatura e traça um breve histórico do desenvolvimento do periódico eletrônico nessas três décadas, abrangendo as modificações ocorridas desde sua existência apenas em formato impresso até as publicações desenvolvidas para o ambiente eletrônico.
