                                            [0] => Statistical information plays a key role in the conception, design and implementation ofpublicpolicy, which guide governmental decisions and actions (both direct and indirect). Thus - andas a reslllt of changes in the scope ofgovernment activities- the demandfor statistical information(public and official) has increased in scope and scale. Understanding the dynamics ofthis demandhas become a challenge for official statistical agencies. InfactJrom the supply side, however,in spite of thefact that newer and better tecJlllologiesare introduced, there is always an awkwardrigidity in the production process itself. Public statistical agencies must strike a difficult balancebetween their legitimacy (related to thedemandfor statistics) and reliability (from thesupplyside,as it aJJectsscientific research). Statistical agencies areconfrontedwith several tOllghchallenges forlhejÚlure. rhis paper wil/ address some oflhese challenges and propose praclical measures aI presenllhal wil/ help deal with lhefuture
                                            [1] => A informação estatística ocupa lugar de realce na concepção, naformulação e na realização das políticas pÚblicas. que orientam as decisões e as ações (diretas e indiretas) dos governos. Para esse fim, em razão das mudanças nos domínios de governo, a demanda por informações estatísticas (pÚblicas e oficiais) vem se diversificando e se ampliando. Perceber a dinâmica dessa demanda, e bem atendê-Ia. toma-se IIIngrande desafio para as agências (pÚblicas e oficiais) de estatística. Com efeito, pelo lado da oferta. por mais que se lance mão de novas e melhores tecnologias, dinâmicas por natureza, há uma incômoda (difícil de ser rompida) rigidez no processo produtivo. Assim. as agências (pÚblicas e oficiais) de estatística debatem-se no complexo equilíbrio entre sua legitimidade (relação com a demanda) e sua credibilidade (relação com a ciência e com a pesquisa, no âmbito da oferta). Muitos e difíceis desafios Ihes são postos emface dofutllro. Pois, pensar esse futuro. e propor atitudes práticas no presente,de modo a garanti-Io. é o objetivo deste texto.
