The catalog, then, showed and will show the instrument to localize an specific bibliographic item in the library, with the function of group informations to its users. The first catalog emerged with the first libraries, as simpie reports or inventories of the works existent in their collections. With the advance of the XX Century, the modem cataloging structure was shaped, that it is the major interest to the present time.

O catálogo, então, representou, representa e representará o instrumento para localizar um determinado item bibliográfico na biblioteca, com a função de agrupar informações para seus usuários. Os primeiros catálogos surgiram com as primeiras bibliotecas, como simples relações ou inventários das obras existentes em seus acervos. Com o avanço do século XX, a estrutura da catalogação moderna foi formada, sendo de maior interesse para a atualidade.
