The role of the Brazilian Government in the stimulation and support to scientific activities for the country is described. Laws and political directives given by governmental plans for the sector are described. Developmental marks for science and technology in the country are pointed, as well as the role of information systems, with emphasis on the leading role of the Brazilian Institute of Information for Science and Technology (IBICT). Conclusions demonstrate that the Brazilian science and technology, as well as the scientific and technological information systems do not have an autonomous and previously determined development, they are conditioned by characteristics and impositions of the context within they operate.KeywordsInformation systems; Information system in S& T.
