The general public’s perceptions of open access to scientific health information

O objetivo foi mapear como membros do público em geral, na cidade de São Carlos, interior de São Paulo, encontram, acessam, avaliam e utilizam informações sobre saúde encontradas na Internet. Um questionário foi disponibilizado online, sendo também utilizado como protocolo de entrevista com membros do público selecionados aleatoriamente. Os dados foram submetidos à análise estatística. Uma pontuação para o grau de “Letramento Informacional Cotidiano em Saúde” dos participantes foi gerada com base nas percepções dos participantes sobre suas competências na busca pela informação cotidiana. Embora prefiram obter informações de saúde a partir de fontes médicas e/ou científicas, em geral eles não têm confiança em suas habilidades para recuperar informações e avaliar sua confiabilidade. A credibilidade percebida das fontes de informação de saúde na Internet foi maior para artigos científicos disponíveis em acesso aberto, embora apenas um quarto dos participantes os use de fato. Muitos afirmam que usaram, ou usariam, informações de saúde disponíveis na Internet no processo de tomada de decisão, incluindo para mudança de médico. A relativamente baixa auto-estimativa dos participantes no que diz respeito a suas competências de letramento informacional em saúde poderia ser combatida com programas públicos diretamente destinados a minimizar esta percebida lacuna, baseados em políticas de acesso aberto à literatura científica.@pt

The aim of the research was to map how members of the general public in Brazil find, access, evaluate and use health information found on the Internet. An online survey of structured questions was used as a protocol for face-to-face interviews with members of the public randomly selected. The collected data underwent statistical analysis, performing simple correlations with variables of age, gender and occupation. Adapting the monitoring tool developed by Niemelä et al., a score for the participants’ degree of Everyday Health Information Literacy was generated based on the participants’ perceptions of how they carry out certain daily information tasks. Although participants obtain health information from medical and/or scientific sources, overall they lack confidence in their own skills to retrieve information and assess its reliability. Perceived credibility of health information sources on the Internet was higher for scientific articles available in open access, although only a quarter of participants in fact use these. Many participants claim to have used, or would use, health information found on the Internet in the decision-making process, including to change doctors. Participants’ relatively low estimation of their health information literacy skills could be tackled with programmes directly aimed at minimising this perceived lacuna.@en
